Modern slavery has no place in our business or in the supply chains we help clients navigate. This statement sets out the steps BetterAlta takes to understand and reduce the risk of modern slavery and human trafficking, in the spirit of the Modern Slavery Act 2015.
A note on scope. The formal reporting duty under section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 applies to organisations above a set turnover threshold. We publish this statement voluntarily because tackling exploitation is central to responsible sourcing, and because our clients rightly expect it.
01Our business
BetterAlta is a UK-based sourcing-led procurement advisory firm. We help clients identify, verify and evaluate suppliers and run a governed sourcing process. As an advisory intermediary, we do not buy or sell goods, and we are not party to the supply contracts our clients enter into. Even so, sourcing is at the heart of what we do, so we take our role in reducing exploitation seriously.
02Our own operations and people
Our direct workforce is small and UK-based, which we consider low risk. We pay fairly, engage staff and contractors under clear written terms, and confirm the right to work. We expect the same standards from anyone working on our behalf.
03Supply chains we help clients navigate
The higher risk lies in the international supply chains our clients source from. Because we influence supplier selection, we use that position to raise standards rather than ignore them. Within the scope agreed for each engagement, our supplier verification can consider:
- a supplier's own labour and human-rights practices and policies;
- evidence of fair pay, safe working conditions and freely given employment;
- known risk factors associated with a sector or region; and
- red flags that warrant deeper checks before a supplier is recommended.
Where verification raises a credible concern, we flag it to the client so it can be factored into their decision.
04Due diligence and risk-based checks
We take a risk-based approach: the depth of checks is proportionate to the sector, geography and nature of the requirement. Our findings and reasoning are captured in the audit pack delivered at the close of each engagement, so decisions are traceable.
05Raising concerns
Anyone who suspects modern slavery connected to our work or the suppliers we assess can report it in confidence to hello@betteralta.com. Serious concerns about immediate risk to a person should be reported to the police, or to the Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline on 08000 121 700.
06Review
We review this statement at least annually and update it as our business and approach develop.
